Septic Tank Cleaning and Installation
Septic tanks are an important sanitary element of any home plumbing system. Here at Southern Home Services in Alabama, we understand the importance of keeping your septic system clean and running smoothly.
Septic systems work by catching all the waste from your toilet in a tank, usually buried in the yard. Once in the tank, the waste seperates into three layers; scum, water, and sludge. The scum is all the oils and other wastes that are lighter than water. Scum floats to the top of the tank. In the middle pure water sits containing natural bacteria to break down the waste materials. The heavy solids in the form of sludge sink to the bottom of the tank where they are broken down. As new materials and waste water reach the septic tank the old materials are flushed out into a drainfield. The drainfield is a trench filled with pipes dug in your yard. In the drainfield, the water is slowly filtered and absorbed into the ground itself usually making for good fertilizer.
However, the problem comes in when the scum and sludge build up and block up the tank. Every few years, have a proffessional Birmingham plumber come clean out the septic tank to ensure there are no blockages that could lead to backup and flooding.
